The city of Ranchos Palos Verdes is addressing social media rumors about a proposed toll road on scenic Palos Verdes Drive South – and officials say there is some truth to the story.
The idea of creating a toll to pay for the road’s maintenance has been pitched several times over the last year, according to City Manager Ara Mihranian.
“Residents from different neighborhoods within the landslide area have approached and spoken at council meetings saying, you know, the cost to maintain Palos Verde Drive South is affecting our budget, and the city should consider a toll road,” he told KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian.
Prior to 2023, the city spent around $700,000 a year repairing and repaving the winding road every few months. As land movement on the Palos Verdes Peninsula sped up, that figure ballooned to $3-4 million per year.
After a resident brought up the toll road idea again during a January City Council meeting, it was penciled in for a discussion in June – but there’s no formal proposal yet.

Mayor David Bradley told Tavidian he doesn’t believe a toll road is economically viable, but he supports doing a study to look into the idea.
