Redondo Beach has become the first city in the South Bay to reach “functional zero street homelessness,” state and local officials announced Wednesday.
This means that over the first six months of 2024, more people in Redondo Beach were housed than became homeless, and the median time people spent on the street was less than 90 days. Ronson Chu with the South Bay Cities Council of Governments spoke to KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian about how they did it.
“Redondo Beach has achieved functional zero by being able to bring people off the streets within 14 days of their homelessness experience,” he said.
Chu said Redondo Beach will have to add additional shelter units in the future to maintain its success. He added that the city is looking to bolster its mental health resources.
