The filing period for candidates interested in representing their local Neighborhood Council for Region 11 has opened, the Los Angeles City Clerk announced Friday.

There are 99 neighborhood councils in Los Angeles, covering 12 regions. Established in 1999, neighborhood councils serve as advisory bodies who advocate for their communities with City Hall on issues such as development, homelessness and emergency preparedness.

Elections for open seats on these neighborhood councils will be conducted over several months on a rolling regional basis, starting with Region 11, encompassing West L.A., which has the following councils: Bel Air-Beverly Crest, Del Rey, Mar Vista, Palms, South Robertson, Venice, Westchester-Playa, West Los Angeles, Westwood, North Westwood and Westside.

EmpowerLA, the city department that oversees neighborhood councils, is expected to conduct public outreach to boost awareness of these elections and build civic engagement.

Each region has its own candidate and voter filing periods, as well as unique election days. The 2025 neighborhood council elections will be conducted using an all-vote-by-mail election model through March 24, 2025, according to EmpowerLA.

Those interested in becoming a candidate for their respective region can go to clerk.lacity.gov/ncelections.

Neighborhood councils vary as one council might provide a youth-seat or another may provide a seat specifically for a business representative.
