Dozens of rideshare drivers gathered outside LAX Thursday, calling for better pay and benefits from companies like Uber and Lyft.
They rely on gig work as their full-time job and say their income has fallen dramatically over the years, especially since Proposition 22 passed in 2020, classifying gig workers as 'independent contractors.'
Drivers say it's time for the companies to pay up.
One worker told KNX News' Nataly Tavidian, "When I started six years ago, they collected 25%, and then it went to 30%, 35, 40, 45, and 50. Now it's 60%!"
He said the drivers are often left with barely enough to cover gas costs for a ride, and it's about more than just pay. They want benefits, too, like workers' compensation insurance, which they do not get as non-employee workers.
The California Supreme Court agreed to consider possibly overturning Prop. 22 and must decide within the next 90 days.
