Sgt. James Elliott said the victim, identified only as a 30-year-old Moreno Valley resident, was riding his Vitacci scooter northbound on Alessandro when he skidded off the six-lane corridor and struck the light standard.
Paramedics reached the location minutes later and pronounced the man dead at the scene.
It was not immediately known whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash, according to Elliott.
Anyone with information about the death was asked to contact the police department's Traffic Bureau at 951-826-8723.
