A SAG-AFTRA strike has been avoided, at least for now, as the actors union has agreed to extend their contract until July 12 to allow further negotiations with Hollywood studio.

Without the extension, the approximately 160,000 media professionals would have joined the WGA on strike at 11:59 p.m. on Friday.

SAG-AFTRA has been in talks with studio negotiators since June 7, with sticking points including minimum pay increases, the use of AI, and streaming residuals.

Representatives from SAG-AFTRA released a notice saying:

"We have been in negotiations with the AMPTP for more than three weeks under an unusually tight negotiating schedule while fighting for a comprehensive and inclusive contract."

"In order to exhaust every opportunity to achieve the righteous contract we all demand and deserve, after thorough deliberation it was unanimously decided to allow additional time to negotiate by extending the contract until 11:59 p.m. PT on July 12, 2023."
