SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KNX) — The former Norton Air Force Base, now San Bernardino International Airport, will begin offering daily commercial passenger flights beginning in August.

Breeze Airways, a Utah-based passenger airline launched last summer by JetBlue founder David Neeleman, will offer nonstop service to San Francisco International Airport for $49 one way.

Colton Mayor Frank Navarro, president of the San Bernardino International Airport Authority, characterized the announcement as “monumental” for the Inland Empire region.

“As the airline plants its seed here, nurtures it, and starts expanding routes, that’ll bring more people to fill the seats,” he said.

Tickets are on sale for Breeze Airways’ inaugural Aug. 4 flight from San Bernardino to San Francisco. The aircraft, an Embraer E195, will seat 118 passengers.

Dozens of new airport hires will be made in coming months, according to Navarro and San Bernardino Mayor John Valdivia.

“This is just the beginning,” Valdivia said. “We’re grateful for Breeze Airways to drop down and join us in this partnership.”
