SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KNX) — The mayor of San Bernardino is taking a paycut. Starting in Dec. 2022, the mayor’s salary will be reduced to $50,000 a year, a 56% decrease from the current salary for the position.
The move was made after an examination of the mayor’s compensation last year, according to The San Bernardino Sun. On Wednesday, the city council agreed in a 5-2 vote to align the mayor’s annual pay with the position’s duties.
The council also considered the salaries of mayors in neighboring cities, as well as the salaries of full-time employees in the city, according to the publication.
Mayor John Valdivia earned $115,561 in 2020, making him the ninth-highest paid mayor in the state, according to The Sun. His total compensation last year was about $143,000.
The mayor’s position is one of four seats up for election in the June 7 primary.
