The driver killed in the crash was identified as 29-year-old Jorge Andres Delgado of Santa Ana, according to Officer Natalie Garcia, spokeswoman for the Santa Ana Police Department. He crashed into a car driven by 32-year-old Leticia Placencia Alvarado of Santa Ana, who was also pronounced dead at the scene, Garcia said.
Five others -- ages 39, 19, 18, 11 and 1 -- sustained minor injuries in the crash, which happened around 6:35 p.m. Monday near the 2200 block of North Main Street, north of Warner Avenue, Garcia said.
According to preliminary reports, a BMW traveling the wrong way on Main Street "at a high rate of speed" slammed into a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction, triggering the multi-vehicle crash.
The five other victims were taken to a hospital and were expected to survive, Garcia said.
It's unclear why Delgado was driving against traffic but it was for a "long distance," so investigators suspect it was intentional, Garcia said.
"We're still trying to figure out the motive," she added. "It's going to take some time to interview (Delgado's) family and other witnesses."
