The Santa Monica City Attorney has given the city the green light to amend a local law to ban unhoused people from sleeping in public.
Three different plans will go before the City Council during Tuesday night’s meeting in response to a recent Supreme Court ruling that allows cities to criminalize sleeping outdoors. One plan would remove an exemption from the local anti-camping law that allows the use of sleeping bags, blankets, and bedrolls in public spaces.

The other two options are allowing the current exemption to remain, or directing staff to “continue to monitor what other cities are doing.”
In an interview with KNX News, Santa Monica Mayor Phil Brock said he’s concerned about his city becoming a “dumping ground.” He claimed that he’s “been told by people in Los Angeles” that unhoused people are flying into LAX and asking for directions to Santa Monica.
