Buses in Santa Monica could soon be equipped with cameras capable of identifying and ticketing cars illegally parked in bike lanes.

The city recently tested the need for such a technology, attaching cameras to a couple of cars to see if people parking in bike lanes was actually a problem.

As KNX News' Karen Adams reports, the study found more than 1,600 violations across just a few streets over a six-week period.

Joe Linton with L.A. Street Blog says it's an even bigger problem than the study suggests. "If it happened to me once a month, it wouldn't be a big deal, but it happens most times that I ride - there's a car in my way."

To combat the issue, Santa Monica wants to adopt a program using AI technology paired with cameras attached to city buses to catch and ticket motorists parking illegally.

The report is set to be discussed at a city council meeting later this month.

L.A. Metro is rolling out a similar plan for bus lanes and stops within the city and hopes to have the program running by the end of the year.
