LOS ANGELES (KNX) — More residents of the El Segundo area have filed a lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles claiming their households have been exposed to hydrogen sulfide gas and other dangerous toxins stemming from a spill at the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant last year.

The plant was flooded with raw sewage on July 11 when debris filters became clogged. To prevent the plant from shutting down entirely, workers reportedly released 17 million gallons of sewage into the Pacific Ocean.

The 21 plaintiffs to the suit in L.A. County Superior Court said they experienced dizziness; irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat; respiratory issues; nausea and occasional vomiting. Pet owners claimed animals experienced rashes and nausea.

Plaintiffs further claimed that city officials have known since 2019 that the plant system was unreliable and susceptible to floods. They are are seeking unspecified damages.

Their suit follows another filed earlier this month. That lawsuit is also being reviewed by the office of L.A. City Attorney Mike Feuer.

A spokesperson for the L.A. Department of Public Works declined to comment on the pending litigation.
