Traffic on the San Diego (405) Freeway will be reduced by several lanes overnight through the Sepulveda Pass in early December while Caltrans crews work on scheduled repairs and improvements.

The first set of reductions is set to begin Monday and continue through Friday between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Those reductions will be followed by the roadway being reduced to three lanes in both directions starting at 10 p.m. on Dec. 12 and continuing through 5 a.m. on Dec. 15.

The scheduled Dec. 1-5 reductions are:

-- up to two northbound lanes between Wilshire Boulevard and Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland Drive

-- up to two southbound lanes between Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland Drive and Wilshire Boulevard

-- up to one northbound lane between Sepulveda Boulevard and Victory Boulevard

-- the Burbank Boulevard onramps to northbound and southbound I-405

-- Hollywood (101) Freeway connectors to northbound and southbound I-405

During these closures, Caltrans will install new concrete barriers known as K-rails and perform other median barrier work.

The scheduled Dec. 12-15 lane reductions will include:

-- the northbound 405 reduced to three lanes from just south of the Getty Center Drive/Sepulveda Boulevard. offramp to just north of Bel Air Crest Road

-- closure of the Getty Center Drive/Sepulveda Boulevard offramp

-- the southbound 405 reduced to three lanes from the Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland Drive onramp to the Getty Center Drive/Sepulveda Boulevard onramp

-- closure of the Getty Center Drive/Sepulveda Boulevard on- and off-ramps

-- closure of the Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland Drive on-ramp.

Motorists are advised that they will likely experience intermittent lane closures as the work continues and are strongly advised to seek alternate routes or use public transportation during the closures.

Suggested alternate routes include going:

-- north on Sepulveda Boulevard and then east/north on Skirball Center Drive to the onramp to the northbound 405

-- south on Sepulveda Boulevard to the onramp to southbound 405 at Getty Center Drive

The work is part of the $143.7 million I-405 Pavement Rehabilitation Project, which is designed to improve safety and mobility along the 405 between Van Nuys and Westwood as well as extend the pavement life.

Extended weekend lane reductions are expected to occur every two weeks along various sections of the 405. There will be about 25 such closures and lane reductions while work on the project continues.

The schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions or operational issues.
