The county Department of Public Health issued an ocean water closure order late Thursday affecting a portion of beach and ocean water stretching a half-mile in either direction from 123 Pebbly Beach Road in Avalon Bay.

Health officials said the closure was in response to a spill of 2,289 gallons of sewage, which "impacted the asphalt and flowed to the nearby beach, affecting both the sand and ocean water."

People were advised to avoid all contact with the water and wet sand.

Health officials will continue to conduct water sampling, and the closure will remain in effect until bacteria levels meet health standards.
