Are you ready for the 2028 Los Angeles/Long Beach/Inglewood/Temecula/Oklahoma City Olympic Games?
As L.A. faces a billion-dollar budget deficit, the city’s goal of a “no-build” Olympics is more crucial than ever. As a result, some of the events will be held at venues in other cities – with equestrian competitions moving to Temecula, basketball in Inglewood, canoeing and softball in Oklahoma City, and in the latest update, sailing will now be held at the Long Beach Pier.
Councilmember Tim McOsker isn’t happy about that last one.
“I'm not going to question whether we should go to Oklahoma City for softball, but I do question what is obviously a mistake,” he shouted at Friday’s City Council meeting. “And instead of some backroom, a couple of bros making this decision somewhere, let’s do something for the sport.”
McOsker said the wind for sailing is far better at the Port of L.A. than in Long Beach, and keeping the event within the city could bring in revenue from 10,000 spectator tickets.
“I think we are missing some major opportunities to showcase our city's unique assets,” Councilmember Traci Park said. “We are giving away sports to other places and other communities that were born right here in the city of Los Angeles that have deep cultural ties to our neighborhoods and our communities.”
LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover told City Council the organization isn’t “ready to go public” with a complete list of venues for all 56 Olympic competitions. The final list will go public by April 9.
