The horror-drama film "Sinners" scored a leading 17 nominations for the 31st annual Critics Choice Awards Friday, falling just short of the record of 18 set by "Barbie" two years ago, while the Netflix limited series "Adolescence" was the top television nominee with six nods.

"Sinners" was nominated for best picture, along with "Bugonia," "Frankenstein," "Hamnet," "Jay Kelly," "Marty Supreme," "One Battle After Another," "Sentimental Value," "Train Dreams" and "Wicked: For Good."
Michael B. Jordan was nominated for best actor for his double-duty playing twin brothers in "Sinners." He will be challenged in the category by Timothée Chalamet for "Marty Supreme," Leonardo DiCaprio for "One Battle After Another," Joel Edgerton for "Train Dreams," Ethan Hawke for "Blue Moon" and Wagner Moura for "The Secret Agent."
Oscar-winner Emma Stone was among the nominees for best actress for her work in "Bugonia." She was joined in the category by Jessie Buckley for "Hamnet," Rose Byrne for "If I Had Legs I'd Kick You," Chase Infiniti for "One Battle After Another," Renate Reinsve for "Sentimental Value" and Amanda Seyfried for "The Testament of Ann Lee."
Ryan Coogler scored nods for best director and best original screenplay for "Sinners." Also earning nods in the directing category were Paul Thomas Anderson for "One Battle After Another," Guillermo del Toro for "Frankenstein," Josh Safdie for "Marty Supreme," Joachim Trier for "Sentimental Value" and Chloé Zhao for "Hamnet."
Nominations for best animated film went to "Arco," "Elio," "In Your Dreams," "KPop Demon Hunters," "Little Amélie or the Character of Rain" and "Zootopia 2."
On the small screen, Apple TV's "The Studio," which set records for comedy shows during this year's Emmy Awards, was nominated for best comedy series. It will compete with "Abbott Elementary," "Elsbeth," "Ghosts," "Hacks," "Nobody Wants This," "Only Murders in the Building," and "The Righteous Gemstones."
Drama series nods went to "Alien: Earth," "Andor," "The Diplomat," "Paradise," "The Pitt," "Pluribus," "Severance" and "Task."
"Adolescence" will be challenged in the best limited series category by "All Her Fault," "Chief of War," "Death by Lightning," "Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy," "Dope Thief," "Dying for Sex" and "The Girlfriend."
The Critics Choice Awards will be presented Jan. 4 at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, with comedian and television personality Chelsea Handler hosting the ceremony for the fourth consecutive year. The show will air live on E! and USA Network channels.
This year's event will feature four new categories -- variety series, stunt design, sound and casting/ensemble.
