Skid Row People’s Market, a privately owned grocery store, has decided to sell its shop after nearly 30 years.
A nonprofit group called Creating Justice LA is going to buy the store. KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian spoke to Stephen Cue Jn-Marie, who has had a close relationship with the family who owned the market.
“He wanted to sell it to a black community member because the black community has supported his family for a long time, being that Skid Row is predominantly a black community,” he said.
The goal of this neighborhood grocery store was to create access to healthy food in an area known as a food desert.
“Our big push is on economic healing,” Jn-Marie said. “We're trying to create an economic base here in Skid Row, a healthy economic base here in Skid Row.”

The owners didn't want to sell their business to a for-profit group. They wanted their family's legacy to go to someone that would elevate the community.
The store’s name will remain.
