SoCalGas is urging people across the region to call 811 before they start digging on their property.
On Monday, utility company representatives were showing residents in Monrovia how they should check their property
Brian Haas, a spokesperson for SoCalGas, told KNX News’ Jon Baird that the utility company had more than 2000 incidents of somebody digging and hitting a gas line in 2024.
“Some 80% of the digging damages that we receive are where people did not call 811,” he said. “So these are preventable, and so our message to folks is call 811. It's free, it's simple, and it's the law.”
He added that gas lines can be an inch or two below the surface.

“If you're planting a tree, call 811 two days before you're going to dig,” he said. “We'll come out. We'll mark where the gas lines are and prevent a big headache.”
Haas also said that if you accidentally hit a gas line, it could cost you thousands of dollars in repair costs and civil penalties.
