As cleanup efforts continue in Boyle Heights after last month’s warehouse fire, the South Coast AQMD issued a notice of violation over the stench complaints from the warehouse.
In a statement released on Monday, official say they've received over 40 complaints “reporting rotten, sour, garbage-type odors in the area" and that inspectors confirmed the smells.
KNX News’ Jon Baird spoke with some residents who say they've had to tolerate the smell day and night.
“During the nighttime, I feel like it especially lingers, and I think because they're working during the nighttime,” one woman said.
One resident, Paula, said the smell “comes and goes."
“There are flies everywhere, you know,” she said. “The smell is not that great at all. I do see other people wearing their masks. It's pretty sad for the kids. It's not good for the adults or the children or even the elders, you know.”
Officials with Lineage, the warehouse operator, say it has already removed more than 356 tons of food from the warehouse. And intends to comply with the mayor’s 45-day cleanup order. The company also said recently that it has provided some $2.5 million in direct assistance to the community, including the distribution of masks and air purifiers and 7,000 meals.
