Martin Luther King Community Hospital in South Los Angeles is on life support and now there’s a push to save it.

The hospital needs $25 million to keep its doors open and its financial problems prompted Assemblyman Mike Gipson and the mayors of Compton, Lynwood, and other nearby cities to call on lawmakers in Sacramento and the governor to save it.

Gipson said the hospital is invaluable to the community, especially expecting moms.

“If in fact Martin Luther King Hospital closes its doors and there [ are] 17 other hospitals who are no longer providing the kind of prenatal care, maternity care for mothers, what does that do? It places mothers and children at risk,” he said.

If it doesn’t get the funding, the hospital will be slated for closure next year.
