LOS ANGELES (CNS) - More rain fell over most of Southern California early Thursday, although the showers became more scattered, with sun peaking through the clouds in some areas while rain poured down in others.
By mid-morning, blue skies had taken over in West Los Angeles and other areas as the storm system slowly moved to the east.
"By afternoon the low will be over L.A. County and eastern Ventura County," according to the National Weather Service. "A slight chance of thunderstorms will persist into the early afternoon over eastern L.A. County.
Additional rainfall amounts will mostly range from a tenth to a half-inch."
A winter storm warning will remain in effect until 2 p.m. in the eastern San Gabriel Mountains, with a less severe winter storm advisory in force during the same hours in the western San Gabriels.
Overall, however, most of the area should see clearing by Thursday afternoon, beginning a dry and warming period expected to extend through the weekend.
The latest storm system, however, dumped significant rain amounts in many areas, exacerbating the already saturated conditions and contributing to more issues with potholes and mudslides.
According to the NWS, as of 8:30 a.m. Thursday, more than an inch of rain had fallen in downtown Los Angeles since the latest storm began Wednesday. Nearly 2 inches fell in Bel Air, while an inch and a half fell in Santa Monica and Pasadena.
But less than one-third of an inch fell in most of the Antelope Valley, according to the NWS.
On Wednesday morning, a roughly quarter-acre mudslide occurred in the Beverly Crest area that blocked at least two residential driveways. No injuries were reported and no major structural damage was detected.
In northern Los Angeles County, a landslide that began last week along the southbound Golden State (5) Freeway north of Templin Highway began to expand, a result of new precipitation, swallowing some of the pavement on the freeway shoulder and advancing toward the actual traffic lanes. Caltrans closed off the two right lanes of the freeway late last week due to the advancing slide.
A sinkhole opened Wednesday afternoon on the California Boulevard offramp from the southbound Long Beach (710) Freeway, forcing a closure of the ramp.
Another mudslide overnight in the Studio City area, damaging several vehicles.
But forecasters said the Southland is in for a break from the rain. Some cloudy conditions are anticipated Friday, but temperatures will being to rise slightly.
Saturday will bring more sun and even more warming, although temperatures will still remain about 3 to 6 degrees below normal, forecasters said.
