A storm that brought several inches of rain to Southern California is winding down Friday.
Over the past five days, nearly three inches of rain fell at LAX, while Van Nuys got over four inches. Meteorologist Dave Bruno told KNX News the high rain totals weren’t unexpected.
“This storm was going to pull up subtropical moisture into it, so we knew that was going to happen.” he said. “The big question we had was where the storm was going to track.”
The most intense rain fell in Oxnard, which got more than six inches this week, with over 3 inches falling in one hour on Wednesday night. Bruno said such intense rain is normally only seen in more tropical areas of the country.
“I've seen different studies saying that that's a once in 200 year event, it's a once in 1000 year event,” he said. “I haven't done research on that, and I don't think there's enough research, to be honest, that has been done on something like that. But suffice it to say, that is a very rare occurrence.”
Bruno, who has worked for the National Weather Service for more than 30 years, added that he’s never seen such intense rain.
