POMONA, Calif. (KNX) — A middle school student was arrested earlier this week after allegedly threatening gun violence against two Pomona schools in a social media post. On Wednesday, authorities revealed the youth intended the post as a joke.

The post reportedly contained a threat to “shoot up” Marshall Middle School and Ganesha High School, both in Pomona, on Wednesday, according to the Pomona Police Department. Concerned students and parents notified administrators of the post, who inturn informed law enforcement.

Over the course of the ensuing investigation, officers were able to determine the owner of the social media account by which the alleged throat was posted — a student at Marshall Middle School.

Investigators contacted the student in question who later admitted to publishing the post as a joke, police said. The student was subsequently arrested for making criminal threats.

Police determined the suspect youth did not have access to a gun and neither students nor faculty at the two schools were ever in danger.

The identity of the suspect has been withheld due to his minor status.
