An arson investigation is underway after El Compadre, a market and restaurant in a Sun Valley strip mall, was destroyed in a fire.
It happened at 4:40 a.m. on Sunday in the 8500 block of N Sunland Blvd.
Jennifer Middleton with the Los Angeles Fire Department said 106 firefighters responded to the scene.
“The first arriving company reported a one-story commercial building, strip mall with heavy fire showing from the roof,” she told KNX News’ Jon Baird.
It took firefighters over 30 minutes to knock out the fire, officials said. No injuries were reported.
The son of the man who owns the market and restaurant told reporters that police showed them surveillance video of a man riding up on a bicycle early Sunday morning and putting a bottle through the mail slot, which resulted in a fire exploding inside the store
The owner told Baird he bought the store nine years ago and is still in shock.
“Everything is, like, crazy,” he said.
