Two San Bernardino SWAT officers were hospitalized following a deadly shootout on Wednesday.

Officials said the altercation resulted from a Tuesday shooting. An officer was shot during an attempted traffic stop near the intersection of Bobbett Drive and East Olive Street in San Bernardino.

According to the San Bernadino Sun, SWAT officers attempted to contact the suspect on Wednesday. The interaction resulted in a shootout between the suspect and the department at Victoria Avenue in Highland. Two officers were shot and the suspect was shot and killed after approaching a patrol car.

San Bernardino Police chief Eric McBride said the suspect was a known gang member who had a $200,000 warrant out for his arrest for charges of assault with a deadly weapon.

"Obviously this is someone who we don’t want out on the streets, who’s been on the run for at least...it looks like 2019 that warrant was issued," said McBride.

McBride added that having three officers shot over the course of two days shows there are some failures in the criminal justice system.

"It's a sad state of affairs that has taken place, and I think our criminal justice system really needs to dial up on these people for committing a crime," he said.
