A 29-year-old man was arrested for suspicion of first-degree murder in connection with a man's death following an altercation in Redondo Beach which preceded his vehicle colliding with several parked cars, police said Tuesday.

However, Donavan Lamont Walter was released after the case was presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for filing consideration, pending further investigation, according to Redondo Beach Police Department Lt. Jeff Mendence.

Officers responded to the intersection of Beryl Street and North Broadway around 10:09 p.m. Sunday to a report regarding a vehicle collision, Mendence said.

The driver was treated at the scene by paramedics and later taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center where the suspect was pronounced dead.

A preliminary investigation led detectives to discover that the victim had been involved in an altercation in a nearby parking lot at 181 N. Harbor Drive, where the victim was presumed to have suffered severe injuries that may have resulted in the death, Mendence said.

Further investigation led detectives to locate Walter, whose last known address was in Virginia, who was arrested and booked at the Redondo Beach Police Department jail, Mendence said.

Anyone with further information on the case was urged to contact Redondo Beach Police Detective Jonathan Keener at 310-379-2477 at ext. 3874 or via text at 310-339-2362. Emails detailing additional information about the case can be sent to crimetips@redondo.org.
