Tax season officially starts today and this year many low-income families can take advantage of some free tax help.

Every year hundreds of millions of dollars are left on the table by Los Angeles area families, refund money and tax credits they're entitled to.

Now there's help through a new city initiative called Free Tax Prep LA.

Audrey Casillas Manager, Community Economic Development Services with the Koreatown Youth and Community Center, says "we want to make sure they are claiming all of their tax credits and their refunds."

The best way to get an appointment is visit the website, she says.

She says the service is open to anyone making $57,000 or less with a simple tax need.

This year, tax season begins two weeks later than usual creating a delay for Angelenos hit hardest by COVID-19 to file their taxes and receive a refund.

ELIGIBILITY

Individuals earning $57,000 or less can claim the state and federal earned income tax credit (EITC) where they may be eligible for up to $10,000 cash back.

Families with children should inquire about California’s Young Child Tax Credit where they may be eligible for up to $1,000 with qualifying children under age 6.

ITIN filers are only eligible for the CalEITC state credit and Young Child Tax Credit, totaling up to $4,000.
