About 200 teachers in the Little Lake City School District hit the picket lines Thursday morning at seven elementary schools and two middle schools.

The schools are in southeast Los Angeles, including Sante Fe Springs, Norwalk, and Downey.

Maria Grace Pilios, the president of the teachers union, told KNX News’ Jon Baird that contract talks have stalled over class sizes and support for special education, but mainly over health insurance.

“For the last 55 years, our healthcare has been fully funded in exchange for raises, so we haven't been getting actual, well, we haven’t gotten any raise for the last 3 years,” she said. “ But we would get very small increments before that, in exchange for our healthcare.”

Single teachers are now paying up to $700 a month for health insurance. Teachers with families now pay up to $1,400 per month.
