INDIO, Calif. (KNX) — A Coachella man suspected of shooting a 17-year-old during a robbery in Bermuda Dunes was being held Monday without bail.

Raymond Angel Vargas was arrested and booked into Indio jail on Saturday in connection with the attempted murder of the male teen, along with suspected robbery and illegal possession of a loaded firearm.

According to Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. David Aldrich, the incident occurred on the night of Feb. 10 in the 79700 block of Avenue 42, just west of the Bermuda Dunes Airport.

Authorities alleged Vargas met the victim, whose name has not been disclosed due to his minor status, on the pretext of buying certain items the youth had listed for sale on one or more social media accounts.

When they met, Vargas allegedly pulled a gun on the teen and shot him "multiple times" before fleeing the scene with the merchandise, unpaid for.

Witnesses at the scene called 911, and deputies and paramedics found the victim a short while later. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery.

The victim was reported to be recovering as of Monday afternoon.
