A group of teenagers on E-Bikes were caught on video setting off illegal fireworks in Hermosa Beach on Saturday night.

Videos obtained by NBC 4 showed fireworks going off near a lifeguard stand on the beach and later in a crowded area in Pier Plaza.

John Fahmy told the news station he was hit by one of the fireworks.

"So, it hit me in the back of my head right here and partially the back of my ears," he said.
"And yeah, I was just like, my ears were ringing crazy for a few minutes."

A security guard at Patrick Molloy’s told the outlet the fireworks sprayed several people in the face and that “an angry mob” tried to stop one of the teens, but the teens got away.

Police told the outlet that two of the teenagers came back and were detained, but they were not the ones who set off the fireworks so they were released to their parents.

An Instagram account, south.bay.responders, wrote that police believe they have a primary suspect, but did not release any further details.

A man told KNX News’ Jon Baird he couldn’t believe what happened.

“ And you know the most insane thing about it is the patrons that are the ones like trying to stop the kids, they're the ones that get harassed and end up going to jail for it,” he said.

It comes nearly a week after Hermosa Beach City Council passed an urgent ordinance aimed at cracking down on unruly E-bike riders. That ordinance included banning riders from speeding, racing, or stunt activities and prohibiting the use of E-Bikes on Pier Plaza and the Greenbelt.

One resident told KNX News’ Jon Baird he was in favor of the new rule.

“Honestly, when you are walking, they pass [at] full speed, they are heavy and they can cause injuries to people,” he said.

KNX News has reached out to the Hermosa Beach Police Department to see if anyone was arrested or cited.
