THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (KNX) – Shelter Hope Pet Shop in Thousand Oaks has added a new requirement for anyone looking to adopt a pet for them – you must be in support of gun control.

“We do not support those who believe that the 2nd amendment gives them the right to buy assault weapons,” founder Kim Sill said on its website. “If your beliefs are not in line with ours, we will not adopt a pet to you.”

Sill also said that those fostering dogs from them who “believe in guns” are asked to return the animals back to the shop.

Sill went on to explain that the gunman in the 2018 Borderline Bar and Grill mass shooting had gone into the shop “for community service.”

“We believe he had scouted many locations and we were one of them,” Sill explained. “We changed our policy about volunteering after that incident, but now we feel confident to go even further than that.”

She said that the shop has a choice of who they work with, and that anyone who lies about their beliefs to the shop during their interview will face consequences.

“If you lie about being a NRA supporter, make no mistake, we will sue you for fraud. If you believe that it is our responsibility to protect ourselves in public places and arm ourselves with a gun--do not come to us to adopt a dog,” she said. “We have a choice of who we work with.”
