An unclaimed Mega Millions ticket purchased in L.A. is going to cost someone $2.9 million if they don’t cash it in.

KNX News’ Karen Adams spoke to Tim, who frequents the SK gas station on National Blvd in Mar Vista, where the winning unclaimed lottery ticket was sold. It is a busy station, right off the 405 and 10 freeways, so anybody could unknowingly be in possession of the ticket.

“I'm gonna go in there and check my numbers right now. I got one ticket that's been sitting in my pocket for a couple months,” he said.

Unfortunately, Tim doesn’t have the winning lottery ticket, which was sold on December 12, 2023. The Mega Millions ticket matched five numbers but missed the mega number.

Whoever has the winning lottery ticket has until 5 p.m. on Friday to bring it into one of California Lottery’s nine offices across the state. If it goes unclaimed, the $2.9 million will go to public schools across the state.

The California Lottery has raised more than $1.1 billion in unclaimed prizes for public schools in the state since the lottery first began ticket sales in 1985.
