With a nationwide shortage of pilots and other STEM-related workers, Torrance schools have partnered with its airport to give students a closer look at where science, technology, engineering, and math can take them.

KNX News' Nataly Tavidian spoke with David Smith of Robinson Helicopter Company, who said it's essential for students interested in STEM careers to know there is a future for them in their own backyard.

"...if they want to stay in the South Bay, they have a great place to be in the most exciting cutting edge products and live and work around the Torrance Airport," Smith said.

Students at the airport's annual STEM Day are already interested in the field and want to broaden their knowledge of physics, planes, and everything else aviation. So, Torrance Airport allows them to get inside choppers and aircraft and attend workshops with aviation industry experts.

Experts leading the classes say there is a need for more workers in the aviation industry—not just pilots but metal workers, manufacturing workers, inspectors, and others.
