Trader Joe’s is planning a nationwide expansion in 2025, with 12 new stores opening nationwide – including three in the San Fernando Valley.

The expansion is fairly modest, but food marketing expert Phil Lempert says the chain is focused on two key metrics: profitability and customer loyalty.

“They want to have stores where they've got loyal customers, so it takes a little bit more foresight, a little bit more intuition, and really understanding your consumer to where you want to open those stores to make sure that they’re successful,” he told KNX News’ Pete Demetriou.

Lempert said Trader Joe’s is targeted at specific shoppers, especially millennials and Generation Z.

“These two generations frankly love food,” he said. “They want to save money, and they don't care about store brands, and the unique part of Trader Joe’s is they’ve made their store brands fun.”

Lempert also pointed out that Trader Joe’s is owned by the same family that owns Aldi, which also aims to deliver “high quality and great prices at the same time.”

The new locations are all expected ot be up and running by the end of 2025.
