Traffic is expected to be heavy on Wednesday as some Southern California residents are either returning home from the holidays or getting a jump start on New Year’s.

Doug Shupe with the Automobile Club of Southern California told KNX News’ Jon Baird said drivers should leave as early as possible to avoid traffic.

“You still want to drive at times when you're normally awake, so you're not drowsy behind the wheel,” he said. “But you want to avoid those rush hour commute times in the morning in the afternoon when people heading to and from work are mixing on the roads with the travelers heading in and out of town.”

The ideal driving times for drivers is before noon and after 7 p.m.

For those heading out of town, they’re most likely heading to Las Vegas. AAA ranked Las Vegas as the number one travel destination for Southern California drivers. San Diego placed second.
