Opening statements were underway in Los Angeles on Monday in the first of many trials accusing social media giants of addicting and harming children

This trial is centered around a young woman who says social media platforms are highly addictive and harmful, KNX News’ Karen Adams reports. The landmark case is one of hundreds and is the first time the platforms will defend themselves before a jury. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is expected to take the stand at some point.

Several families whose children died, they say due to the harms of social media, traveled from all over to be at the courthouse in downtown L.A.

“I need to be here today because she should be here today, and that's the bottom line,” one woman said. “That shouldn't happen to any other families.”

TikTok and Snap, who were originally named in the lawsuit, have already settled with the young woman.
