Two dead following alleged train theft, car chase in Ontario

ONTARIO, Calif. — Police Wednesday were investigating a vehicle collision resulting from a short case, beginning in Fontana and ending in Ontario. Both vehicle occupants were killed as a result of the impact.

Fontana police responded to a call of a possible vehicle in distress shortly before 4:30 a.m. near the train tracks at Slover and Calabash avenues in Fontana. Police said a train conductor reported spotting a van that was possibly stuck.

When officers arrived, they discovered an alleged cargo theft in progress. The suspects immediately fled in their vehicle, and a chase ensued.

The pursuit ended in Ontario when suspects lost control of the van and crashed near the intersection of Carnegie Avenue and Jurupa Street. First responders declared the occupants, an unidentified adult male and female both of Hispanic descent, to be deceased.

Upon searching the van, officers claimed they found evidence of the theft inside.
