Police discovered that an unidentified U.S. Secret Service agent had been robbed at gunpoint, with the suspect taking a bag from the agent, Nunley said.
During the encounter, the agent opened fire on the suspect, but it was unclear if the culprit was struck.
"The suspect(s) were not located, and it is unknown at this time whether the suspect(s) were injured as a result of the incident," police said in a statement. "Officers have located some of the victim's belongings in the area and the incident is still being investigated."
The suspect is believed to have left the scene in a 2004-2006 silver Infiniti FX35.
It was unclear if the Secret Service agent's presence in Tustin was in any way related to Saturday's visit to the Southland by President Joe Biden, first lady Jill Biden and former President Barack Obama, all of whom attended a star-studded fundraiser Saturday night in downtown Los Angeles.
Anyone with information regarding the armed robbery was urged to contact Detective Melendrez at 714-573-3372 or gmelendrez@tustinca.org.
