A series of residential burglaries in the West Los Angeles area has the UCLA Police Department concerned students are being targeted.

According to Lt. James Echols with university police, four burglaries have occurred around the Thanksgiving holiday. All of the victims were UCLA students, who Echols said are often seen as easy prey.

"Most criminals are opportunists, and they see an opportunity in and around areas around college campuses because they know that most students are not paying attention to their environment," Lt. Echols told KNX News' Pete Demetriou.

In one recent incident, burglars broke into a student's home while they were asleep. The thieves stole several items from the residence.

The UCLA Police Department and the LAPD are currently conducting an investigation, reviewing evidence and surveillance footage to identify any potential suspects.

Police are advising students to secure their apartments and inform their neighbors if they plan to be out of town.
