'We started to cry literally because of joy': Woman from Ukraine makes contact with her grandma after losing contact

LOS ANGELES (KNX) – On March 15, KNX In Depth spoke with Mila – a woman from the port city of Mariupol in Ukraine who escaped to Spain. During the conversation, she expressed her concern for her grandmother’s whereabouts.

On Friday, Mila told In Depth the good news.

“By great luck and fortune, the friend of our family managed to help our grandma to get out from beseeched Mariupol to the village nearby, where she’s safe,” she shared. “Everybody’s taking care of her and, yes, thank god we are able to talk to her every day and right now it’s a great, great release and pleasure to hear her voice, you know?”

She recalled the emotional phone call that brought her and her family relief and eased their anxieties.

“We started to cry literally because of joy, yes, because of (the) nervous situation,” she said.

“I felt release because I’ve had all this fears that all this time, maybe she has run out of water or there was not enough food (for) her. What she told us, she went through literal hell, but thank god she had enough water and she managed to eat something. But of course, I hope this whole situation won’t ruin her health and we’ll be able to have our healthy grandma and yes, I’m so grateful she’s safe and sound right now.”

As for whether her beloved grandmother will be joining her in Spain, Mila said she’s working on that.

“I’m waiting for fire to cease a little bit at least in that part of Ukraine so I will be able to go because my father has a car there and I hope this car still exist so I will just grab my father’s car and my parents’ medical documents and diplomas, old photos of our ancestors and my grandma and I will bring her here,” she said.
