As Los Angeles International Airport prepares for a busy travel day, technicians who work for United Airlines protested outside the airport.

Teamsters Local Joint Council 4 picketed outside Terminal 7 Friday morning. They’re demanding a new contract and for the airline to stop outsourcing fleet maintenance overseas.

“This contract campaign is really about safety and it's a safety issue,” Christian Castro, the spokesperson for the union, told KNX News’ Jon Baird. “Our jobs are being outsourced to different countries where they don't have the standards we do and the mechanics aren't at the standards that we have. So we want to keep the jobs here to make sure that the safety standards are as high as possible.”

He added that he and the union want to get United Airlines back to the table for negotiations.

“Our members just want to work as they always have,” he said. “They love what they do and they just want to make sure that they get the high standards, good, fair wages, and that the jobs stop being outsourced and they stay here in America.”

United Airlines sent the following statement to KNX News:

We are eager to reach an agreement with the Teamsters, which represents United mechanics, and are actively talking with them, including negotiations.

This comes days after United Airlines flight attendants union authorized a strike.
