A brand-new hospital is being built to replace the existing one on the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center campus in Carson.

KNX News’ Margaret Carrero spoke to Dr. Christina Ghaly, medical director for the Department of Health Services for L.A. County, about the new hospital. She said the old hospital is over 60 years old and massively outdated.

“It presents a lot of challenges for the patients and for the staff to work efficiently in,” Ghaly said. “And the staff does an amazing job providing high-quality care services, but it's just not done in a space that gives proper dignity and respect to our patients.”

She said the new 347-bed hospital will be a modern facility that will have private rooms, closed ICUs, more privacy for patients, and a better working environment for staff. The $1.7 billion project will also include a new parking garage and an outpatient clinic building.
