The state of California is receiving more federal money to combat abandoned oil wells.

KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian spoke to Nalleli Cobo, 23, who said these abandoned oil wells have impacted her health. Cobo grew up in South Los Angeles about 30 feet from an active oil and gas well. She said this caused her to develop asthma, nose bleeds, and body spasms. Now, Cobo is in remission.

“I would sleep in a chair to prevent choking on my own blood at night,” she said. “At the age of 19, I was diagnosed with stage two reproductive cancer and I was forced to choose between my reproductive system or my life and I fight every day.”

Cobo said this funding is a step in the right direction.

“This is a problem that is very much here. We have hundreds, if not thousands, of oil wells in the Los Angeles area,” L.A. Mayor Karen Bass said.

California plans to use the funding to plug or restore more than 200 abandoned oil wells.
