Volunteers in Altadena have taken on the task of clearing the overgrown lots of fire survivors.
Toni Bailey Raines with the Altadena Talks Foundation said she started the initiative Neighbors Helping Neighbors after seeing her own parents' lot overrun with weeds and vegetation. So far, the group has cleared 10 lots, all for free, with 220 more to go.
“I don't want to see anyone burdened with either fines or that we would charge them to clear their lots, because it really is neighbors helping neighbors,’ she said.
But she said they need an army of volunteers and donations as they race to clear more lots as the fire season approaches.
“6,000 homes burned down, and so there are a ton of lots that need to be cleaned in order to not be fined or get a violation notice,” she said. “So I need an army of volunteers. I need donations.”
She said that if she could get 50 to 100 volunteers on the weekends, they could clear more lots.
She said she's already invested thousands of her own money on tools and has seen an outpouring of help from various organizations.
