DOWNEY, Calif. (KNX) – A 17-year-old high school football player is being remembered by his community after he was killed in a car crash in Santa Fe Springs over the weekend.

Jaylon Connish, a student at Warren High School, was in the car, along with two others. According to an Instagram post by Warren High School, the two other students in the car were also football players.

“It is with a heavy heart that we send prayers for Jaylon Connish, who passed away in the crash,” the school wrote.

“For anyone who knew Jaylon, they could attest to the fact that he was a remarkable young man. He always had a smile on his face, and that smile truly lifted your spirit. He was a tremendous athlete and an even better young man.

The collision happened just before 11 p.m. on Saturday on the Santa Ana Freeway, north of San Gabriel River Freeway, City News Service reported.

The three teenagers were in a gray Nissan Altima that “veered to the right and collided into a raised asphalt curb and then traveled off the roadway into a metal light pole” before rolling down an embankment, California Highway Patrol Officer E. Torres told City News Service.

Two passengers, who weren’t wearing seatbelts, were ejected from the car. The driver was the only person wearing a seatbelt.

The three teens were rushed to the hospital. Connish, a passenger in the car, died.

The conditions of the other two are unknown at this time.

The Downey Unified School District said mental health support would be offered to students and staff, according to Fox 11.
