Water main break opens sinkhole near Venice Canals, closes boulevard

A water main break opened a sinkhole in Venice Tuesday morning.

Fire crews were dispatched at about 3:20 a.m. to flooding that was reported in the 200 block of North Venice Boulevard near the Venice Canals, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Firefighters blocked off the area and handed the matter over to the L.A. Department of Water and Power, which reported that a 16-inch water main had broken, with 34 customer accounts affected.

Crews were working on repairs and service restoration was expected by 4 p.m.

Both traffic lanes on North Venice Boulevard were closed between Alberta Avenue and Canal Street, according to the DWP.
