You’ve seen those driverless Waymos on the surface streets of L.A., but soon you might just see them on the freeways.
Pierre Kreitmann, an engineer at Waymo, said the company had its first test drive on Tuesday. He said the car handled the traffic on the freeway very well.
“It went great,” he told KNX News’ Emily Valdez. “There was a little bit of traffic, so the car on average was lower than the speed limit, lower than 65.”
Kreitmann added that the company will be conducting more tests.

“We interact and work very closely with regulators at all levels - so local, California, and federal - to both keep them updated on our progress and make sure that we meet the requirements that they set for all of our operations,” he said.
Rides on the freeway could be offered sometime this year
