Last week, LAPD Chief Michel Moore announced that he’d be retiring at the end of February. But who will replace him?

KNX News’ Craig Fiegener spoke to Councilmember Traci Park about who should be the next chief.

“At the end of the day, it is about the individual and their merit and qualifications and the leadership that they are going to bring to the department,” she said.

Park said the most important factor is who would be the right person for the city right now.

Councilman Kevin de León said he’d like the next chief to be a person of color.

“A woman would be fantastic, you know, I’m always open to it,” he said. “And I don't think we've had a Latino or Latina woman in the history of the city of Los Angeles to lead this law enforcement branch.”

However, de León said the next chief needs to understand the L.A. culture.

The L.A. Police Commission will pick three candidates, then Mayor Karen Bass will either pick one or deny them all and tell the commission to start over. The next LAPD Chief will serve during a crucial time in the city’s history as the city prepares for the 2028 Olympics.
