It’s Giving Tuesday, and there are plenty of nonprofits and charities out there to donate to, especially in Los Angeles. And many of those organizations are getting creative to raise money.
Rasheeda Childress, senior editor for fundraising at the Chronicle of Philanthropy, spoke to L.A.'s Morning News about Giving Tuesday. She said lots of charities are focusing on what they're doing to help in their community. They’re also sharing stories about how donations help make a difference.
“It is a difficult time to give right now because of inflation in the economy, but when people feel a cause is dear to their heart, they are willing to open up their pocketbooks,” Childress said.
She said Giving Tuesday tends to do very well for nonprofits, even when there have been economic difficulties.
“Oftentimes there are matches on Giving Tuesday,” she said. “So their dollar goes twice as far.”
Childress adds that many nonprofits offer volunteer days, so people aren’t just giving money, they’re involved with the charity itself.
Even when people are not able to donate, they can volunteer their time instead.
“If they volunteer on this one day, they're often willing to come back a second day later in the season when it's really important for homeless shelters or food banks or things like that, that need manpower,” she said.
Some corporations will offer volunteer days to their employees, especially on days like Giving Tuesday.
If you do choose to donate money, California Attorney General Rob Bonta reminded people Monday on how to donate safely and avoid charity fraud.
The most important thing to do is check the charity's registration status.
