Before Jim McDonnell can put on the Los Angeles Police Department's badge, take the oath, and begin leading the department, he'll have to appear for a series of hearings at Los Angeles City Hall.
The first will likely happen in a couple of weeks in front of the Public Safety Committee, which will quiz him about his philosophies on law enforcement and, if they approve, send his name to the 15-member council for a full vote.

While many council members have already expressed support for McDonnell, Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson told KNX News' Craig Fiegener that he's not sold just yet.
"I'm excited to meet McDonald," Harris-Dawson said. "I've not met him before. I think he was going out as I was coming into the council, so I'm eager to meet him, and hopefully, I'll see what the mayor saw."
Harris-Dawson said he is still doing his homework and has no basis for an opinion on McDonald's ability to fill the role other than Mayor Karen Bass' endorsement.
"The main thing I know about him is that the mayor has put him in front of the councils, so that means a lot, but I still got to do my own work," said Harris-Dawson, who often agrees with the mayor.
When the vote reaches the Los Angeles City Council, it will require eight yes votes for McDonnell to get the job.
